Since the GISNET network went full IPv6, we've received quite a few questions from customers. Some assume IPv6 automatically makes the internet faster, while others worry that IPv6 is less secure.
To avoid misunderstandings, here are some common myths along with the facts, explained as they are.
Myth 1: IPv6 Always Makes the Internet Faster
Fact: IPv6 is not a speed upgrade. Your internet speed is still determined by the plan you choose, the quality of the network, and WiFi conditions at home.
What can differ is the path. With IPv4, many ISPs use multiple layers of NAT (often called carrier-grade NAT) because addresses are limited. With IPv6, connections to services that support IPv6 can run more directly without that address-sharing layer. In some cases latency can be slightly better, but results vary and it is no substitute for your plan's speed.
Myth 2: IPv6 Is Less Secure
Fact: Security isn't determined by the IP version, but by firewall settings and user habits. Home routers that support IPv6 generally reject unsolicited incoming connections by default, so devices at home are not automatically exposed to the internet.
IPv6 was also designed from the start with support for IPsec for encryption and authentication. Even so, that doesn't mean all traffic is automatically encrypted. Keep using strong passwords, update your devices regularly, and don't expose devices to the internet unnecessarily.
Myth 3: You Have to Replace Your Phone or Laptop
Fact: No need. Most phones, laptops, and smart TVs released in roughly the last ten years already support IPv6. Modern versions of Windows, Android, iOS, and macOS are all ready.
Only a small number of very old devices may not support it. Even then it's not a problem, because those devices can still use IPv4. Want to check your device? Follow our guide on how to check your IPv6 connection.
Myth 4: IPv4 Will Be Switched Off Right Away
Fact: No. Today the internet runs on a dual-stack system, with IPv4 and IPv6 active side by side. It's the same on the GISNET network: customers still get IPv4, as well as IPv6.
The transition to IPv6 is happening gradually over many years. You don't need to worry about your connection suddenly dropping because IPv4 is discontinued.
Myth 5: Websites Without IPv6 Can't Be Opened
Fact: They still can. Because your connection is dual-stack, your device chooses whichever path is available. If a website or app supports IPv6, your device can use IPv6. If not, it uses IPv4 as usual.
All of this happens automatically in the background. You don't need to configure anything.
Myth 6: IPv6 Is Only for Large Companies
Fact: IPv6 is for everyone, including home users. Major services such as Google, YouTube, and Netflix have supported IPv6 for a long time, and your phone is most likely already using it every day without you realizing.
For small business owners, IPv6 actually makes things easier, for example accessing CCTV remotely as long as the devices and network used also support IPv6. Also read our guide to internet for online CCTV. For dedicated customers, GISNET also provides a free /48 IPv6 block.
Myth 7: IPv6 Reveals My Home Address
Fact: IP addresses, whether IPv4 or IPv6, do not contain your home address. Location estimates based on IP addresses are generally rough, for example only down to the city or region, and are often inaccurate.
In addition, modern operating systems use privacy extensions: devices create temporary IPv6 addresses that change periodically for outgoing connections. The goal is to make devices harder to track from the same address over a long period.
Myth 8: IPv6 Is Complicated and Must Be Configured Manually
Fact: For GISNET customers, IPv6 is enabled automatically. Routers installed by our team already support IPv6, and your devices will get an address on their own. Manual configuration is usually only needed if you use a personal router whose IPv6 feature hasn't been enabled.
Summary
| Myth | Quick fact |
|---|---|
| IPv6 is always faster | Speed still follows your plan; the path can be more direct |
| IPv6 is less secure | Security depends on the firewall and settings |
| You must replace your devices | Modern devices generally already support it |
| IPv4 will be switched off right away | Both run side by side (dual-stack) |
| Non-IPv6 websites can't be opened | They still work over IPv4 |
| Only for large companies | For everyone, including homes |
| Your home address is revealed | IP addresses don't contain home addresses |
| Must be configured manually | Enabled automatically on the GISNET network |
