Good news for GISNET customers and prospective customers: the GISNET network is now full IPv6. This means your connection already uses the next-generation internet protocol that is also used by major services such as Google, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Netflix.
What is IPv6, and why does it matter? Here's a short explanation without complicated jargon.
What Is IPv6?
Every device connected to the internet needs an IP address, much like a home address so data knows where to go. For decades, the internet has used IPv4, which has a limited number of addresses (about 4.3 billion), and the supply of new addresses has run out worldwide, including in the Asia-Pacific region.
IPv6 is its successor. It has an almost unlimited number of addresses (about 3.4 × 1038), so every device can get its own address.
The Difference Between IPv4 and IPv6
| Aspect | IPv4 | IPv6 |
|---|---|---|
| Number of addresses | About 4.3 billion, already exhausted | Almost unlimited |
| Sample address | 192.0.2.10 | 2401:f60:92::10 |
| Address sharing | At many ISPs, one address is shared by many customers (NAT) | Every device can have its own public address |
| Future readiness | Legacy technology | The internet standard of the future |
How Do Customers Benefit?
1. A more direct connection
With IPv4, many customers usually share one public address through NAT. With IPv6, your devices can connect more directly to services that support IPv6, without an extra "address-sharing" layer.
2. Easier online CCTV and remote access
Devices that need to be accessed from outside the home or office, such as CCTV, NVRs, or small servers, are easier to reach when they have their own address, as long as the CCTV/NVR equipment and the network used to access them (for example mobile data) also support IPv6. Our support team is ready to help with remote access setup. This is very helpful for business owners who monitor their shops from their phones. Also read our guide to internet for online CCTV.
3. Ready for an ever-growing number of smart devices
Phones, laptops, smart TVs, CCTV, even smart home devices: the number of devices in every home keeps growing. IPv6 is designed to accommodate them all.
4. A long-term investment
IPv4 addresses have run out, so the internet of the future runs on IPv6. With GISNET, your connection is ready right now, with no need to switch services later.
Do I Need to Set Anything Up?
No. IPv6 is enabled automatically on the GISNET network. Routers installed by our team already support IPv6 (if you use your own router, make sure IPv6 is enabled), and modern phones and laptops support it too. Services that don't support IPv6 yet can still be accessed as usual over IPv4, because the two run side by side (dual-stack).
Want proof? When you open gis.net.id from the GISNET network, look at the IP address badge at the top of the site. If your device is already using IPv6, the address will be shown there.
GISNET's Commitment to Network Technology
IPv6 readiness is nothing new for us. The GISNET team has completed IPv6 Advanced training from IDNIC–APJII and earned the Hurricane Electric IPv6 Sage certification. GISNET is also a registered member of APJII. Details are available on our Legal & Certifications page.
