Home WiFi Security: Protect Your Router, Guests, and Children's Devices

Simple steps to keep your home WiFi secure: a strong password, checking connected devices, managing guest access, and protecting children's devices.

Tim GISNET 5 min read Internet Tips

Home WiFi today isn't just for phones. There are work laptops, smart TVs, CCTV, and children's tablets connected every day. The more devices you have, the more important it is to keep your home network secure and used only by the people you allow.

The good news is that you can do most of the security steps yourself, without any extra equipment. Here's the guide.

1. Use a Strong WiFi Password

The password is the main door to your home network. An easy-to-guess password lets other people use your WiFi, and even see other devices on the same network.

  • Use at least 8 characters; longer is better.
  • Combine uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.
  • Avoid birth dates, phone numbers, family names, or "12345678".
  • Change it regularly, for example every few months, or immediately after a resident moves out.

GISNET customers can change their password themselves through the Customer Portal in the WiFi menu, for both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks. The full steps are in the article how to change your WiFi name and password through the portal.

2. Check Connected Devices

The WiFi menu in the Customer Portal has a Perangkat Terhubung (Connected Devices) list. Make a habit of checking it from time to time. Compare it with the devices you actually have at home: family phones, laptops, TVs, CCTV, and so on.

Found a device you don't recognize? The simplest step is to change the WiFi password. After that, all devices will be disconnected and only those who know the new password can reconnect.

3. Manage Guest Access

Giving your WiFi password to guests is perfectly normal. The problem is that a password shared with many people is hard to control. Guests' phones also usually save the password and reconnect automatically on their next visit.

  • Don't share the password with too many people. Only with household members and guests who really need it.
  • After an event or visit is over, change the password through the portal.
  • Some routers support a separate guest WiFi, so guests aren't on the same network as your personal devices. Availability of this feature depends on the router model. Feel free to ask the GISNET support team whether your router supports it.

4. A WiFi Name Without Personal Information

Your WiFi name (SSID) is visible to anyone near your home. Avoid using your full name, address, house number, or phone number. Choose a name that you can easily recognize but that doesn't reveal personal information.

5. Protect Your Children's Devices

For children, the most effective protection is actually on their own devices. Phones and tablets already have built-in parental control features:

  • Android: Google Family Link, to set screen time limits, approve app downloads, and view app activity.
  • iPhone and iPad: Screen Time in the Settings menu, to limit time, apps, and content.

As an extra layer, there are family-safe DNS services from various providers that can help filter certain websites. These are usually set up on each device or app. Keep in mind that no filter is perfect. Guidance and open conversations with your children remain the most important thing.

6. Update Your Devices and Change Default Passwords

Devices that are rarely updated may have publicly known security vulnerabilities. Regularly update:

  • The operating systems of phones, laptops, and tablets.
  • Smart TVs and TV boxes.
  • CCTV, IP cameras, and other smart (IoT) devices.

For CCTV and IoT devices in particular, change the factory default password right away, for example "admin" or "123456". Default passwords like these are easy to guess. More CCTV tips are in the article internet for online CCTV.

7. Know the Difference Between Public WiFi and Home WiFi

WiFi in cafés, malls, or public places is shared by many people you don't know. When using it, avoid internet banking or entering sensitive data, and make sure the websites you visit use an https address. For important matters, it's safer to use your home WiFi or mobile data.

Also turn off the auto-connect to public WiFi feature on your phone, so it doesn't connect on its own to unknown networks.

8. Don't Install Routers or Repeaters Carelessly

Adding your own repeater or router to extend the signal is fine, as long as it's configured correctly. A repeater left without a password or still using its default password is like leaving the door to your home network open to anyone. If you're unsure how to set it up, ask the support team first. What About IPv6?

The GISNET network is already full IPv6. Some people worry that IPv6 makes devices at home easier to access from outside. In practice, routers come with a firewall that blocks unsolicited incoming connections by default. This means your devices can still browse the internet as usual, but outsiders can't just get in.

The full explanation is in the article IPv6 myths and facts.

Home WiFi Security Checklist

  1. A strong WiFi password that is changed regularly.
  2. The Connected Devices list is checked from time to time.
  3. The password isn't shared with too many people.
  4. A WiFi name without personal information.
  5. Parental controls enabled on children's devices.
  6. Devices regularly updated, and default CCTV and IoT passwords changed.
  7. Any extra repeaters are password-protected.

One more thing: never give your portal password, WiFi password, or OTP code to anyone who contacts you without a clear identity.
