Slow Home WiFi? 7 Simple Tips Before Calling a Technician

Before giving up on slow WiFi, try these 7 simple steps. Many problems can be fixed yourself in a matter of minutes.

WiFi feels slow during video calls, or movies keep buffering? Don't worry, it doesn't necessarily mean there's a network problem. Often the cause is inside your own home and can be fixed in a few minutes. Try these seven steps before calling a technician.

1. Put your router in the right spot

WiFi signals are easily blocked by thick walls, metal cabinets, and mirrors. Router placement makes a big difference:

  • Place it in the center of the house and somewhere fairly high.
  • Don't keep it inside a cupboard or in the corner of a room.
  • Keep it away from microwaves and large electronic devices.

2. Choose 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz wisely

Many modern routers broadcast on two frequencies:

  • 5 GHz is faster, but has a shorter range. Ideal for devices close to the router, such as a smart TV in the same room.
  • 2.4 GHz reaches farther and handles walls better, but is slower. Suitable for rooms far from the router.

3. Restart the router

A router that has been running for weeks sometimes needs a "rest". GISNET customers can restart their router directly from the Customer Portal (my.gis.net.id), even when they're not at home.

4. Check connected devices

The more devices are active, the more your internet speed is divided. Through the Customer Portal, you can see which devices are currently using your WiFi. Don't forget that TVs, CCTV, and smart devices count too.

5. Change your WiFi password if needed

If unknown devices are connected, your WiFi password may be known to others. Change your WiFi name and password directly from the Customer Portal. Use a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols so it's hard to guess.

6. Test your speed properly

To find out your real speed, run a speed test from a device close to the router, ideally while other devices aren't downloading or streaming. Test results from a room far away usually reflect the strength of the WiFi signal, not the speed of your internet connection.

7. Still having problems? Report it or consider an upgrade

If you've tried all the steps above and the connection is still problematic, report it through a trouble ticket in the Customer Portal or via WhatsApp at 0857-0629-9235. The GISNET NOC team monitors the network 24 hours a day and is ready to help.

However, if the internet only feels slow when the whole family is online at the same time, it may be time to increase your speed. As a guide:

  • Home Lite 20 Mbps (Rp165,000/month) — browsing and social media for 1–3 devices.
  • Home Standard 30 Mbps (Rp220,000/month) — families and online learning.
  • Home Premium 50 Mbps (Rp300,000/month) — 4K streaming and working from home without interruptions.

For large or multi-story homes, placing WiFi access points in the right spots can also help a lot. Our team offers WiFi installation tailored to your location.
