More and more people in Gresik work from home, join online meetings, or sell through marketplaces and social media. For all of these activities, one thing is often overlooked when choosing an internet service: upload speed.
Download vs Upload: What's the Difference?
- Download is the speed at which you receive data: watching videos, opening websites, downloading files.
- Upload is the speed at which you send data: your face in a video meeting, a live selling broadcast, product photos, and files sent to the office or to customers.
Many internet services offer upload speeds far lower than download. That's fine if you only watch content, but for working and selling online, low upload speed is immediately noticeable.
Activities That Need Fast Upload
Video meetings and online classes
Your video and audio are sent continuously throughout a meeting. Insufficient upload makes your face freeze or your voice cut out for other participants, even though your own screen looks normal.
Live selling
When you go live on TikTok, Shopee, or Instagram, your video is sent directly to viewers. A stable upload keeps the broadcast clear and smooth, so viewers stay longer and are more likely to buy.
Sending photos, videos, and work files
Uploading product photo catalogs, promotional videos, or large design files can take a long time if upload is slow. Wasted time means lost opportunities.
Cloud backups and online CCTV
Google Drive, photo backups, and CCTV monitored from outside the home also keep using upload in the background.
Symmetrical Internet: Upload as Fast as Download
All GISNET plans are symmetrical. A 30 Mbps plan means 30 Mbps download and 30 Mbps upload. The full explanation is in the article the advantages of symmetrical internet.
| Need | Suggested plan |
|---|---|
| One person working from home, occasional video meetings | Home Lite 20 Mbps |
| WFH plus family members streaming and attending online school | Home Standard 30 Mbps |
| Regular live selling, lots of video uploads, or several people working from home | Home Premium 50 Mbps |
| Online store with a team, live studio, or small office | Business plans from 50 Mbps |
All plans are unlimited with no FUP, so going live for hours or uploading lots of videos won't get your speed reduced.
Tips for Smooth Meetings and Live Selling
- Use a LAN cable for your work laptop or PC whenever possible. A wired connection is more stable than WiFi.
- If you use WiFi, keep your phone or laptop close to the router and choose the 5 GHz network.
- Postpone large updates and backups on other devices while a meeting or live stream is in progress.
- For live selling, use enough lighting. A dark image makes video look less sharp even with a good connection.
- Check your connection before you start with the Speed Test feature in the Customer Portal. See how to do it here.
Bonus: Ready for the Future
The GISNET network is already full IPv6, the next-generation internet protocol also used by major services such as Google, YouTube, and Meta. Read IPv6 for video calls, streaming, and working from home.
